The War on Intellectualism

Posted October 04th, 2008 at 03:02pm

It seems there is a new threat to our country- an insidious danger that is seeping into our homes and everyday lives that must be stopped at any cost. That threat is intellectualism.

We have heard the some of the buzzwords of this political season- Folksy, Joe Six-pack, Elitist, and Arugula Eating. It seems the new "culture war" or wedge issue is intelligence. The Vice-Presidential debate only solidified the lines in this war. On one side, you had Palin- full of "folksy charm" and "you betcha" language. Then you had Biden, who had a command of the issues, but was called "boring" and (gasp!) "professorial" by the pundits.

Is this the point we have come to in our country? Do we really think that having knowledge about an issue is a liability? Have we learned nothing from the past eight years about voting for the person you "want to have a beer with"? Is being smart or intellectually curious a bad thing?

It seems the war is on and the Republicans have launched another surge strategy.

JOHN USED ELITE TO PRAISE THE NAVY SEAL UNITS AND IN THE SAME DAY USED ELITE TO DISPARAGE SENATOR OBAMA.
DOES THE MAN HAVE ANY SOUL OR HONOR LEFT OR IS HE SOLD OUT FOR CHEAP POLITICAL GAINS.
SEEMS LIKE THERE IS A BIG FIRE SALE AND ONLY THE DEVIL IS BUYING UP AS MUCH OF HIM AS IS LEFT... NOT MUCH.

If the Democrats were actually intellectuals, shouldn't they not have lost two times in a row to an easy win both times and getting a run for the money now?

Politicians put a on face people want to see, an attitude voters can familiarize with. To adapt or evolve to your environment is a precious brilliance. Politics was never about intellectuals. It always has been about survival of the fittest.

IrishRaver is right. The Republicans know who their constituency is, and Palin is making them feel more and more comfortable about their choice. You must know how to reach the citizens to get them to vote for you. Face it folks elections are not won based on those that pay attention to the issues but from those that can relate to the candidates. I wish everyone in this country can be knowledgable on the issues but it just isn't the case. If the Democrats or the Republicans are going to win they must reach the people in the voice that they can associate with.
