Earth Day is NOT just for Earth People...

Posted April 22nd, 2009 at 03:37pm

Hi folks, I'd like to share with you something which happened to me back in the early 1990s.

I was working in a finance office as a cashier, receiving payments over the counter from customers. It was a regular nine-to-five job, good benefits, plus working with people in a business setting, so I had to dress in casual business attire. However, when Earth Day drew closer, I wore a small button on my blouse. it read: "We're All One" underneath a picture of the Earth. It was my own subtle way of getting my message across without breaking office protocol.

Anyway, one afternoon I was assisting a lady, a regular customer, taking her payment and conducting business as usual.

But, before she left, she leaned close over the counter and asked in a low tone, "Are you one of those Earth people?"

Well, I was a bit confused, more like stunned, by her question. The way she'd asked me, it was like I was from a different planet or something. With a sheepish smile, I shrugged and replied, "Gee, I hope so. Aren't you?"

Earth Day has been around since the 1970s and, even in the early 1990s, it was still not a "popular" concept accepted by most folks. I understand that now. I personally believe social awareness of Earth Day is more accepted nowadays.

I've watched Earth Day evolve over the last twenty years and it makes my heart glow "green" with pride!

Programs are now in place for recycling products --everything from computers, used motor oils to paper and plastics, stores now offer printed shopping bags plus there are other small ways which give us "greener" and healthier alternatives.

We, society as a whole, are making conscious strides and, also, teaching our kids (and grandkids) how to be more in tune with the world around us.

Just a simple change in your consciousness, in your lifestyle, can make a big difference in our world!

So, are you one of those Earth people too?

Thx & Big Hugs,

Sabrina )O(
