MUST READ: "Voters Look Close to Passing Gay-Marriage Ban"Posted October 10th, 2008 at 04:18pm
The Miami Herald reported yesterday that “Florida voters look close to passing a gay-marriage ban…” This is no joke. Despite more than a year organizing, raising money and spreading the word about Amendment 2, the latest poll shows the race will be close and voters could approve it. The latest poll – by Mason-Dixon – shows the race is still close and anyone’s to win. But the “undecided” vote will make the difference. In the absence of strong media presence to tell the truth about these amendments, undecided voters in other states often vote to ban what the media refer to as "gay marriage.” It’s reason to worry. But not panic. We know that when exposed to our ads, those “undecided” voters will break strongly in our favor. Our challenge is to make sure that they see our ads and see them often. Yesterday in Tallahassee, our campaign held a press conference with leaders from the League of Women voters, the Florida AFL/CIO, teachers, seniors and religious leaders where we announced an aggressive state-wide media tour and unveiled a brand new TV ad! Even as editorials across Florida continue to rail against Amendment 2, endorsements and press conferences won’t be enough. Winning will take relentless TV and radio advertising. And even though we’ve already invested historic funding in this fight, we need more. If the polls are right, we’ll lose without it. Here’s one thing you can do right now to help: send our ad to your friends and ask them to help you win this historic campaign by matching your donation. Challenging your friends to match your commitment can turn your $50 into hundreds of dollars. Or your $250 into thousands! Remember every dollar we raise will be spent to put our ads on TV and keep them there. Literally every contribution – no matter how big or small – will be spent telling Floridians the truth about Amendment 2. There are only a few days left to even buy TV time in Florida which is why we need your help today. The Florida Red and Blue/SayNo2 Team P.S. If you like our ad, help keep it on the air in your community by making a contribution today. Last year, the Tampa Tribune had this to say about the “Marriage Protection Amendment:” “Gay marriage is not the biggest threat to the institution of marriage…To best defend the institution of marriage, we should quit looking for bogeymen where there are none.” This past weekend, the Tribune spoke up again to oppose Amendment 2. This time saying: “This amendment does more than just target homosexual unions. It puts all manner of domestic partnerships at a possible disadvantage. …why put people in Florida at risk? Besides, state law already restricts marriage to a man and a woman, and Florida doesn't recognize gay unions performed in other states. Our recommendation: Vote No.” Our success reaching out to media like the Tribune is amazing – 11 consecutive daily newspapers have already opposed Amendment 2 – but it’s just part what we’re doing. And we’d like you to know more. To get the scoop, join us on one of two campaign briefing conference calls with our campaign leaders to hear first-hand. Past guests on these calls have included elected officials, our campaign manager, pollsters or media consultants. We encourage you to join us and invite others to get the news but remember these briefings are not open to press and are confidential. Here are the details: Thursday, October 2nd In addition to getting the news, we need your help in sharing it with others and we’re asking you to help us in three ways right now. First, we need your help in getting 1,000 new Florida voters to sign the SayNo2 pledge. Thousands of Floridians have taken the pledge already but we need your help to make sure more and more people sign up. Send them this link in a personal email or use the “forward to a friend” link at the bottom of this email. Second, send a letter to the editor or your local paper telling them why you oppose Amendment 2. Use your voice to ask your neighbors to reject Amendment 2. Our website has sample letters to get you started. Last, we need you to make a financial contribution. We are entering the final media stretch of this campaign where every dollar is important and we need to raise $40,000 on-line in the next six days for crucial TV advertising. If everyone reading this email can contribute $40, we’ll close that gap in no time. You can speak-up for two people by contributing $80 or make a contribution in any amount. Every dollar helps and every dime we raise from this email will go directly into TV ads – delivering our message directly into the living rooms of voters who will decide whether Amendment 2 passes or not. You know how close the race is – most polls have it a “toss-up” – so success depends on you! The Florida Red and Blue/SayNo2 Team P.S. MUST READ: Our Opposition "within striking distance of success"Posted September 24th, 2008 at 04:55pm
But they’ve put together an aggressive push by conservative churches and rallied voters to “support marriage” by approving their proposal. Of course, they continue to mislead voters in press accounts by saying Amendment 2 won’t hurt anyone or take away benefits. Sadly, it appears their efforts are paying off. After one recent public poll found support at just 55%, a more recent poll reported support is now 58% - statistically even with the 60% needed for approval. Read the Miami Herald story: “A proposal to ban gay marriage in the Florida Constitution is within striking distance of success, according to a new poll.” If we’re going to prevail and turn back their efforts we have to match their energy, passion and commitment minute by minute and dollar for dollar. We literally can’t afford to take anything for granted or turn our back for one minute. Floridians are already voting by absentee ballot and every hour we delay is more voters who may only hear the misleading arguments to vote “yes.” When you consider that nearly a third of all votes will be cast BEFORE Election Day, we can’t wait until the last minute to start setting the record straight. The bottom line is simple. In order to reverse their momentum, we need to raise another $2 million for direct mail and TV to these early voters. This is where you come in. We need you to contribute and raise what you can right away. I’ll create my own fundraising page and ask my friends and family for help. It’s up to you. The Florida Red and Blue/SayNo2 Team P.S. As you consider setting your personal fundraising goals or making a contribution, here are some numbers to think about. One TV ad during the 6pm news in Tampa is $4,300. One TV ad running in the afternoon in Orlando is $750. And sending direct mail to voters costs $.50 per home so $100 will pay for 200 pieces of mail.
