24-hour help for gay youth

The Trevor Project operates its helpline, the only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention number for gay and questioning youth. More than 500 volunteers are trained for 40 hours to run the bicoastal call centers.

Volunteering at a gay community center, I've taken suicide calls myself, and I can tell you it's an incredible challenge. You feel like your clutching their hands, and if you fail and let go for a second, they'll plunge to their deaths.

It was beyond my very limited talents and skills to handle, and so I resigned after almost a year, to make way for those better qualified than myself to deal with these situations. But I remain a financial donor, to support this important work in ways more suitable to my own inadequate personal abilities.

And so I have the greatest respect for this kind of project, understanding how difficult & important it is. I'm visiting their site to learn more about them, and if this is something to which I will support & contribute.
