Lead Mechanical Design Engineer- Manufacturing Engineering Department

Abbott Point of Care (APOC) products provide health care professionals immediate access to accurate, critical diagnostic test results at the point of patient care. The 2004 acquisition of i-STAT Corporation, a leading manufacturer of POC diagnostic systems, secured Abbott's access to an advanced technology platform and broad product menu. The i-STAT hand-held analyzer enables physicians to make treatment decisions at the patient's bedside, speeding care in emergency departments, operating rooms and critical care units. The integrated platform has a menu that includes chemistry panels, blood gases, coagulation, and cardiac markers. We are looking for a senior level/principal level mechanical engineer to lead cost reduction projects within our manufacturing department.

JOB SUMMARY:

Set direction for, lead, and execute complex manufacturing engineering technical tasks - tasks that may have multiple inter-coordinating elements. Expectation that the individual will be able both to anticipate and identify key issues and make recommendations for resolution where precedent may not exist and creative thinking is required. Resolution may involve the application of new methods and approaches and may require the consideration of impact with other system components.

CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Cost Reduction o Implement design changes to reduce costs in the existing diagnostic analyzer product line. o Collaborate with other technical resources to identify the optimal redesign solutions for achieving cost savings. o Responsible for meeting design control requirements (design input specifications, validation/verification) o Create or modify any associated documentation related to the implementation of new designs into the manufacturing environment.

- Design for Cost and Assembly/Test Efficiency o Review new product designs to ensure that cost and manufacturability goals are met. o Set test and assembly strategies to ensure mfg efficiency o Review and apply returned product trending data to prevent reoccurrence in new designs. o Collaborate with supply chain and quality organizations to speed vendor selection and qualification.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE - Strong mechanical engineering theory and design background. - Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering - 8+ years of successful relevant experience in designing for electro-mechanical devices with a familiarity related to molding, machining and/or metal stamping. - Experience implementing process improvement, cost reduction recommendations - Strong communication skills (oral and written) - Working knowledge of geometric tolerancing - CAD i.e.: Solid Edge or Solid Works

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE - Masters Degree- Mechanical Engineering - Knowledgeable of FDA and ISO requirements for medical device design and manufacturing processes or experience working in a highly regulated environment
