2 truths and a lie

Two of these are true about me. No joke. Which one's the lie? Take a guess...

personal message

Hi. I'm Tim, and I live in southern Wisconsin.

I'm a gay man who is interested in a meaningful relationship. I'm also a Christian, and very active in my church. In 2007, I wrote our children's Advent (not Christmas) program, and directed it. It was very well received.

I'm also a member of a college campus ministry directing committee.

Professionally, I'm a sign language interpreter. I work all over southeastern Wisconsin, and really, at times, all of Wisconsin and even farther.

I love to cook, love to eat, and hate to clean up. The thing that sucks about that is that the clean up is the last part. I'm very interested in the arts, especially theatre (as you see above), and have been known to write, act, and direct at various times. I hear I do these things well. I also love quiet, and adventure. I need some of both.

I've been working on my mentoring skills so I can support other interpreters in our work. You might find me flying into New Hampshire for weekend workshops on developing mentoring skills and my understanding of interpreting theory. Any guys or gals in or near New Hampshire who want to say hi, cool! Maybe we can do lunch when I'm in the area.

My latest endeavor professionally is that I am studying legal interpreting beginning in January 2009 through mid 2010. This will be a series of nine weekend workshops on various topics related to legal interpreting, and will open up many more opportunities for me in my profession.

What else can I tell you? I enjoy reading, though it tends to be one of those things I get around to rather than insist on doing. I'm very big on friendships, and I'm very big on honesty. I know that we all cover up from time to time, but I work very hard on being consistent and honest, and I appreciate that in others as well.

In the fall of 2006 I had the opportunity to take three and a half months away from my job to do political action work. Wisconsin was facing a constitutional (yes, constitutional) amendment to make same-sex marriage and civil unions illegal. We worked very hard to defeat the amendment; unfortunately, it passed. So, in my home state, the state where I was born and raised, I am now officially a second class citizen. I feel like I'm overstating the case when I say that, but then I remember some of the things people said to me when I knocked on their doors to educate them about the amendment, and I remember how our main opponent said that we (LGBT folk) are lucky that they allow us to live wherever we want. And I think of those of us who have been brutalized for being gay, bi, transgendered, person specific, etc. On the other hand, we got 42% of the vote. Imagine what it would have been twenty years ago!

I'm a bit of a perfectionist, but I'm trying to get over that. Any suggestions?

Well, enough ranting. How are you?
