PRIDE IN BETWEEN:
We are defined by labels and categories. I'm a Black Gay Christian male. As a black man I'm suppose to know everything about Hip Hop, R&B and Basketball. As a gay black man, I'm either a queen or a thug. As a Christian well don't get me started . I'm an actor. I'm constantly sent on auditions for the strong black man with street smarts, comic relief, or voice-overs that require an "urban" sound. Don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with the beautiful men and women who represent these categories. I just don't fit in any of them, not the way they are defined. I love Top 40's Pop music and Volleyball. I'm not flamboyant or overly butch. My voice is, frankly, nondescript and I couldn't play basketball if my life depended on it. I also have a strange fascination with the actor Chris Evans but that's another story. I've spent most of my life trying to fit in my "category" ,and I finally realize, I don't have to!
So what category or label do you feel confined to? Do you exist somewhere in the middle? If you feel like you don't fit in, well maybe you're not meant to. Re-define your world on your own terms and find your Pride in Between!
recent blog postsRED ALERT: FAMILY REUNION IN PROGRESS!!Posted September 03rd, 2008 at 05:33pm My heart's racing; mouth is dry; I've broken out into a cold sweat. I'm afraid for my very life. No, I'm not being held at gunpoint. It's worse much worse. I just pulled into the parking lot for my Family Reunion Picnic! It's been over 10 years since I've attended one of these dreaded events. You see, no one knows I'm gay. Well, everyone knows, but no one talks about it. This isn't any family reunion; it's a black family reunion. Our motto is "If we don't talk about it, then it... We have all experienced this illusive being. Today I shall shed the light on the phenomenon known as the Mysteriously Vanishing Homosexual! Let me explain. Picture it: Me, in a club, shocking! I'm having a good 'ole time with my friends. Suddenly, I lock eyes with a potential mate. We do the popular "Stare-Look-Away-Stare" dance. I quickly guzzle my liquid confidence and make my move. "How's it going", I ask.... (continue reading) OOOOOO, SHINY!Posted August 01st, 2008 at 03:12pm I've only seen two artists in concerts over the years: Janet and Madonna. Last night I decided to step outside of the Diva box to be entertained by a Queen: George Michael. It was a good concert. His vocals are better than ever. Screw American Idol, George is the real deal! But something was missing. I enjoyed the 80s review with the Faith album. I had great seats. George looked and sounded great. So what was it? I completely took myself out of the moment for about 10 minutes to ponder...
