personal message

Beneath the curmudgeonly facade, there's a person with a sense of humor, sense of caring and enjoying life. Am growing increasingly distant from pop culture -- have never watched "American Idol," "Survivor" or any other "reality" (?) show. Prefer instead to read a good book or have a good conversation. Have made it through 30+ years in the newspaper industry with still a shred of sanity. As of mid-2008, I have left the media rat race with a buyout and am concentrating on more important things in life. Recently helped organize an independent gay-affirming church, New Church Family. (check our website at www.newchurchfamily.org) Also busy expanding and enhancing my 7-year-old online book business, KingChamp Books. (www.kingchampbooks.com) Another project involves pressing a petition in federal court to beef up the underfunded pension plan of the Daytona Beach News-Journal. Several militant retirees are trying to preserve the benefits promised to 1,100 present and former newspaper employees in the Daytona area. Depending on whether the real estate market shows any recovery, we are considering relocating to mortheastern Tennessee -- interested in hearing of experiences of other GLBT transplants to the Volunteer State.

(EDITOR'S NOTE: This essay first appeared July 6, 2009 on The Bilerico Project/Florida blog. Cross-posting here for those who have an interest in history and to join in observing October as Gay History Month. -- Tom aka BeachcomberT)
What was the first gay bar in your town? What year did it open? Was it ever raided? Chances are you're probably having trouble answering one or more of those questions. We've just waded through innumerable nostalgia pieces about the 1969 Stonewall raid in... (continue reading)

A three-day Pride festival with the theme of "Stonewall Remembered" will take place in Daytona Beach June 26-28 at the Streamline Hotel. The main event is Sunday June 28 with an all-day party on the hotel's rooftop deck overlooking the ocean. A worship service with the Canaan Band of St. Petersburg will kick things off at 10 a.m. The rock & soul band will be back for more music at noon, and other local musicians, dancers and performers will join in. A historical exhibit about Stonewall and its... (continue reading)

Quick mini-lesson on prostate cancer

Posted March 09th, 2009 at 11:14am

Nothing like a cancer diagnosis to help you sort out what's important in life and how you can help other people. My diagnosis was verified last December, a few days before Christmas, and I had my robotic surgery last week, March 3, at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville. I was released 36 hours afterward, and am home now, rapidly regaining strength. A catheter tube between my legs is the major annoyance, but that will be gone in a few days. My point is not to bore...
