recent blog postsThe War on IntellectualismPosted October 04th, 2008 at 03:02pm
It seems there is a new threat to our country- an insidious danger that is seeping into our homes and everyday lives that must be stopped at any cost. That threat is intellectualism. We have heard the some of the buzzwords of this political season- Folksy, Joe Six-pack, Elitist, and Arugula Eating. It seems the new "culture war" or wedge issue is intelligence. The Vice-Presidential debate only solidified the lines in this war. On one side, you had Palin- full of "folksy... (continue reading) Gay in Iraq: Stories of TerrorPosted July 25th, 2008 at 01:44pm
The plight of gays in gays in Iraq is something I have written about before (see Iraqi Gay Safe Houses to Close). It seems mainstream media is finally catching on to the extreme danger that LGBT Iraqis face. A great piece from CNN called "Gays in Iraq terrorized by threats, rape, murder" tells the story of gay people living in Iraq: Kamal was just 16 when gunmen snatched him off the streets of Baghdad, stuffed him in the trunk of a car and whisked him away to a house. But the... (continue reading) Florida Fundies using Trans-Scare TacticsPosted July 24th, 2008 at 07:01pm
The rightwing group, Citizens for Good Public Policy (insert eye roll here), have launched a campaign to repeal the recently passed gender identity protection clause in Gainesville, Florida. In January, commissioners voted to include the phrase "gender identity" in the anti-discrimination ordinance that guarantees equal access to housing, employment, public accommodation and credit. The commercial shows a little girl on a playground walking into a bathroom. She is followed... Election officials in California made what could be an important change to Proposition 8's language yesterday. Prop 8, which was put forward by fundies to reverse the state's Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage, is on the ballot in November. Some activists think the language change, which spells out the removal of the right for same-sex couples to marry, could help add support to defeat the amendment. Read the change to the language after the jump... Mistrial in California Hate Crime CasePosted June 20th, 2008 at 03:42pm
A mistrial has been declared in the murder trial of Aleksandr Shevchenko, accused of the anti-gay hate crime killing of Satendar Singh in Sacramento in July, 2007. Singh, 26, died as a result of head injuries received during an attack in which Shevchenko used racial and anti-gay slurs. According to The Sacramento Bee: After more than four days of tense deliberations, the jury of seven women and five men could not agree on whether the defendant was involved in the confrontation... Good news from the American Medical Association regarding the care and treatment of transgender people. Resolution 122, called "Removing Financial Barriers to Care for Transgender Patients," was approved by the Reference Committee and subsequently by the entire House of Delegates. The resolution and statement of support will essentially change the argument in many legal cases against public coverage for the treatment of transgender patients. This is especially relevant, for... personal messageWelcome to my page! I am President and Co-Founder of Fight OUT Loud, a national non-profit organization dedicated to empowering LGBT individuals, and their allies, to fight discrimination and hate. My partner and I were inspired to get involved in activism and create Fight OUT Loud as a result of an eye-opening experience of discrimination (read about it HERE or just ask me). I am a vocal community activist and LGBT rights advocate. Besides my non-profit work, I also work as political consultant specializing in web-based action, social networking, and youth outreach. I am also a contributing editor for The Bilerico Project, the nation's leading LGBTQ blog forum, and a political columnist for the online magazine GaySoFla.com. I have been happily partnered for 6 years with my amazing husband Anthony Niedwiecki, a law professor and administrator at Nova Southeastern University (and running for Mayor of Oakland Park in 2009! Woo-Hoo!). We received our civil union from Vermont and are registered domestic partners in Broward County, where we live with our two wonderful dogs. We are also is the proud foster parents of a now college-aged son. When I'm not completely immersed in advocacy work, I somehow manage to have a good time and truly enjoy life. The most important things to me are just to be happy, live life to its fullest, and help others do the same. All in all, I am trying to do my best to make the world around me better. I am also someone who is always looking to talk and get to know new, quality people. I am always looking to expand my group of friends and hang out buddies. So feel free to say hello! You can read my personal blog at The Homo Politico (www.thehomopolitico.com). Or check me out on The Bilerico Project! Find me on MySpace, Facebook, and Youtube and say hello! |
